Tips for Travellers
These tips are based on our own travels to the Yucatan and gathered from
various sources.
Driving tips:
- Watch out for the speed breakers near towns. Our rental sedan would
easily scrape metal on these breakers. One way to minimize
the impact is to go over slowly, at a diagonal angle.
- The signal for letting somebody pass you on the highway is
non-intuitive. Use your left
blinker to indicate that it is safe for them to pass.
- There is a FREE highway service called Green Angels [Ángeles
Verdes], a fleet of radio dispatched trucks with bilingual crews,
who patrol the highways. If you have an emergency while
driving, call the Ministry of Tourism's hotline or (55) 5250-8221,
extension 130/297, to obtain help from the Green Angels. Services
include protection, medical first aid, mechanical aid for your car,
and basic supplies. You will not be charged for services, only for
parts, gas, and oil. The Green Angels patrol daily, from dawn until
sunset. If you are unable to call them, pull off the road and lift
the hood of your car; chances are good they will find you.
- Military and law enforcement checkpoints aimed at detecting
narcotics, alien smuggling, and firearms traffic are located at
some places on the peninsula.

Other tips:
- "X" is pronounced as "sh" in words of Mayan origin e.g. in Xel Ha
or Xcalakoop.
- The local tortillerias are a great source of good, cheap
food. Eat some fresh hot tortillas with local white cheese and hot sauce.
