Mammals

A Field Guide to the Mammals of Central America & Southeast Mexico
(Paperback)
by Fiona A. Reid

Neotropical Rainforest Mammals : A Field Guide
(Paperback)
by Louise H. Emmons, Francois Feer

Birds

A Guide to the Birds of Mexico and Northern Central America
by Steve N. G. Howell

This is currently the best field guide for birding in the Yucatan. It is a bit heavy to carry in the field. One trick used by many birders is to take it apart and reconstruct it as two books - text and illustrations. This makes the illustrations part much more portable and easy to carry in the field. A copy place like Kinko's can do it for you.

Birds of Mexico and Central America
(Princeton Illustrated Checklists) (Paperback)
by Ber van Perlo

It's compact size, location of text and illustrations next to each other and inclusion of North American migrants are big advantages. It does have some shortcomings in quality of illustrations and the fact that the maps are in the back.

A Field Guide to the Birds of Mexico and Adjacent Areas
by Ernest Preston Edwards,
Edward Murrell Butler (Illustrator)

Where to Watch Birds in Central America, Mexico, and the Caribbean
(Princeton Field Guides) (Paperback)
by Nigel Wheatley, David Brewer

A Field Guide to Mexican Birds : Mexico, Guatemala, Belize, El Salvador
(Peterson Field Guides(R)) (Paperback)
by Roger Tory Peterson (Series Editor), Edward L. Chalif

Some information is out of date but this pocket guide is good for quick, field reference.

A Bird-Finding Guide to Mexico
by Steve N. G. Howell

This one is a bit out of date and some locations have changed. There are only a few pages which are of relevance to the Yucatan.

Bird Songs of Mexico: Yucatan Peninsula Volume 1
(Peterson Field Guides(R)) (Paperback)
by Antonio Celis-Murillo, Fernando Gonzalez-Garcia, Danny Meltzer

Songs from over 90 species are included.

Reptiles and Amphibians

Amphibians and Reptiles of Northern Guatemala, the Yucatan, and Belize

by Jonathan A. Campbell

A Field Guide to the Amphibians and Reptiles of the Maya World:
The Lowlands of Mexico, Northern Guatemala, and Belize
(Paperback)
by Julian C. Lee
2000

Smaller, lighter and easier to carry into the field.

The Amphibians and Reptiles of the Yucatan Peninsula

Very detailed and comprehensive but too heavy to carry into the field. Contains specific locality records.
